Seeking to change direction in her career, this client was applying for an Australian Public Service position in a field that was largely new to her. Wishing to ‘get out from behind a desk’ the client wanted a position that more fully utilised her excellent communication and interpersonal skills and her innate desire to help people.

With a background in other public service positions and the private sector, we examined and discussed her previous experience in terms of the key skills and knowledge sought for the five selection criteria for the advertised position. Through discussing each of the criteria we were able to identify pertinent examples from her career history that addressed what was required to undertake the role. The 600-word limit for the selection criteria response required me to express her suitability for the role concisely while retaining all relevant information and maximum impact.
