[wpseo_breadcrumb]

The client had some experience in employment services and had relevant qualifications, so she was seeking a position as a Vocational Coach. She was worried that she was going to have trouble obtaining an interview as she had a slightly sporadic employment history, and therefore, she wanted a professional service to prepare her cover letter. The Vocational Coach position included responsibilities such as providing coaching sessions, developing individualised vocational plans and providing support and counselling to assist with goal achievement, overcoming barriers and reviewing individual progress. This position required the client to prepare a two-page statement addressing some specific key selection criteria, including:

  • Demonstrated motivational, coaching and/or counselling skills and high-level problem-solving skills Demonstrated ability to create and maintain professional relationships with internal and external stakeholders to support service continuity and client outcomes
  • Demonstrated ability to build strong relationships with clients and apply case management skills, including the ability to transition clients to other opportunities for continued growth
  • Ability to assess needs and, in consultation with the client, develop effective client-centred plans based on SMART goals (or similar framework)
  • Ability to utilise high-level communication skills (both written and verbal) to build rapport with clients and adapt communication style according to the audience or target group involved.

Before my initial consultation with the client, I provided a brief explanation of the requirements of key selection criteria, including the importance of providing STAR examples and recommended preparing some notes to aid her in our discussion. When I spoke with the client over the phone, I first asked some simple questions so I had a clear understanding of why she was applying for the position and what her future goals were. We then went through each of the key selection criteria, and I gave her some example suggestions based on her resume and past experience. Once I had some good examples to use, I prepared the cover letter, highlighting some keywords in bold so the reader could see what criterion we were addressing with each example. I also ensured I utilised some keywords that closely aligned with the position description, including the organisation’s vision and values. The client has relevant skills and experience, and I believe the examples she gave me really highlighted her suitability for the role.
