Key Selection Criteria for application to the Registered Nurse Graduate Program

[wpseo_breadcrumb]

The client has recently completed the Bachelor of Science (Nursing) and clinical placements in several hospitals. She was seeking to be accepted into the Graduate Nursing Program in order to consolidate her theoretical and clinical knowledge and experience prior to working as a Registered Nurse in a hospital environment. To be accepted into the Program, the client was required to respond to 3 key selection criteria (maximum 250 words/point);

  • Provide an overview of your demonstrated clinical knowledge in the delivery and improvement of safe, evidence-based nursing and/or midwifery care within a clinical setting
  • Provide an overview of your demonstrated ability to work within a team in a clinical setting and practice in accordance with the NMBA professional standards (EN, RN, Midwife as relevant)
  • Outline your reasons for applying to participate in a Graduate Nursing and or Midwifery Program

To put together this application, I engaged the client in a discussion about her clinical experiences and achievements, extracting a specific example that demonstrated each of the requirements. I ensured that she provided me with a clear Situation, Task, Action and Result for each example to enable assembly of the responses using the STAR model. Because of the limit of 250 words per point, it was necessary to sift through the information provided by the client in order to profile the most pertinent experiences and skills. I called on keywords in the key selection criteria and utilised language and terminology sourced from the nursing industry in general, and the nursing professional standards.

Prior to the consultation, I familiarised myself with the current Graduate Nursing Program guidelines and other key selection criteria previously required by that Program. Through careful listening and questioning, I was able to lead the client through the consultation, ensuring that the examples she provided clearly demonstrated that she was an exceptional candidate for the Program. Initially daunted by the Key Selection Criteria questions, the client is now much more confidently able to submit her application for a place in the Program.
