The brief was to write a three-page statement of claims for a Health Promotions Officer for a QLD local council. The position description provided a clear description of the type of person they were looking for, what they would be responsible for, and the team that they would be working within. The advert listed five criterion points to be addressed, including:

  • Tertiary qualifications in a relevant discipline, e.g., Health Promotion, Public Health, Allied Health, or working towards completion of qualifications.
  • Demonstrated experience in delivering health promotion services or demonstrated knowledge of the requirements for the implementation of these programs.
  • You can quickly develop trust-based relationships with your stakeholders and work collaboratively to achieve health outcomes.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of current health promotions theories, emerging issues and trends, and evidenced-based practice

The client wanted assistance in linking their extensive experience as a Registered Nurse. She had also studied health promotion and related topics at university to transition away from frontline delivery and into preventative health.  To demonstrate her commitment to making a move, she had also recently enrolled in a Masters of Occupational Health and Safety, as well as a Project Management course.

During the consultation, we explored her knowledge of health promotion. We drew examples from her current role as a Registered Nurse and her university assignments to clearly highlight the transferability of skills and experience and demonstrate a strong capability against each of the criteria using the STAR methodology.  I also provided some feedback on her resume that would help to improve her application further.

We turned around the job in 48 hours, and the client was very appreciative of how we had worked together to put forward a strong application. She provided the following feedback;
