Electrical Project Manager
This client had an excellent range of skills and experience, but his previous resume contained a lot of technical detail that did not clearly show his level of expertise and was too distracting and detailed for the front page of his resume. Some clients want to include everything in their resume, so as to not get overlooked, and the document becomes cluttered and long, particularly in certain fields like electrical, where there is a lot of technical terminology and acronyms, voltage specifications, etc.
During our consultation, we spoke about the achievements that the client had gained in over 25 years of experience with one employer, and we were able to demonstrate key strengths in cost savings, safety incident reduction, risk management and contractor management. His employment history was progressive, and this was evident in his job titles, from apprentice electrician through to project manager. The client also provided a list of projects he had worked on, and we matched these up with each job to showcase the extent of his experience in each role, and the increasing responsibilities he was entrusted with.
After gathering all the information, I worked through to consolidate all of his experience and skills, showcasing the key points rather than listing every single task he had worked on. The result was a tighter resume that broke his skills down into key groups (Leadership, Project Management, Technical and Interpersonal), and a solid Professional Profile that introduced him as a highly experienced candidate with an attractive blend of skills required for project management roles. Underneath each job, his projects were listed, which is where the technical information regarding voltage, project value, etc. could have a place, without being too distracting or overcrowding the pages. These were simply listed in bullet point form.
With all the key skills broken down and listed on the first page, the recruiter is not forced to have to read through pages of technical detail in order to find out who the candidate is, and what he can offer.
