Case Study – Key Selection Criteria for an Enrolled Nurse by Jackey M.
The client was an experienced Enrolled Nurse/Supervisor with significant experience in the aged care and mental health fields. She was seeking a role that would allow her to demonstrate her excellent patient care skills and clinical knowledge, which presented new challenges and opportunities to develop her skills and experience. She had completed four clinical placements as a student nurse in a multi stay surgical unit, mother and baby mental health unit, neurology ward of a major hospital and finally in an aged care facility. The application required a three-page maximum response to the following essential selection criteria.
- Eligibility for registration in the category of Enrolled Nurse by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia
- Demonstrated experience in managing a patient caseload under the supervision of a Registered Nurse/Midwife
- Demonstrated sound level of knowledge and practice in Mental Health nursing
- Demonstrated effective interpersonal, negotiation and conflict resolution skills
- Demonstrated effective written and verbal communication skills
- Demonstrated experience working in collaboration with consumers and carers to deliver recovery-oriented, trauma-informed care
To put together this application, I engaged the client in a discussion about her clinical experiences and achievements, extracting a specific example that demonstrated each of the requirements. I ensured that she provided me with a clear Situation, Task, Action and Result for each example to enable the assembly of the responses using the STAR model. Because of the limit of three pages, it was necessary to sift through the information provided by the client to profile the most pertinent experiences and skills. I called on keywords in the key selection criteria and utilised language and terminology sourced from the nursing industry in general and the nursing professional standards.
Prior to the consultation, I familiarised myself with all the key selection criteria required. Through careful listening and questioning, I led the client through the consultation, ensuring that the examples she provided clearly demonstrated that she was an exceptional candidate for the position. The client is a most proficient and efficient Enrolled Nurse with outstanding people skills and a caring attitude. She can feel very confident that her application for this position will be well regarded.
