Transferrable Skills From Personal and Volunteer Work Used to Create Tailored Entry Level Resume

[wpseo_breadcrumb]

The client came to Select Resumes looking for work in the community services industry upon completing her undergraduate studies. Requiring a complete revamp of her resume to target her preferred industry and several cover letters targeted at two vastly different roles, I felt confident I would be able to help having worked at management level in this industry before.

Without a solid career history to draw from, I asked questions about the client’s experience from her volunteer roles, community involvement, and transferrable skills from previous jobs. During this conversation, I was able to draw out situations in which she had demonstrated the skills the employers were looking for to highlight these examples in the STAR format in her cover letters. I also used the consultation time to go through the list of skills and attributes for the ‘ideal candidate’ and role responsibilities to ascertain which of these could be used to build a strong resume that is targeted to the industry.

After gathering all the information I would need to write her applications and getting a sense of who the client was to write authentically, all that was left was to pin down what resume design she would like. Overwhelmed by the number of choices, the client described to me the style she had in mind, and I emailed her through a link to a design I felt fit her requirements. Happy with this, she let me know to go ahead with this design and I was able to put together an application that sold her practical and theoretical knowledge in line with contemporary frameworks and looked fantastic.
