Graduate Nurse Cover Letter by Ashleigh P
Since completing a Bachelor of Nursing, the client wants to apply for a position in a graduate program at the Mater. To apply for this role, the client was required to prepare a two-page cover letter outlining their interest in the program, explaining their preference for a particular placement and how they would be a suitable candidate. Furthermore, the advertisement requested that the cover letter address some selection criteria, and while not essential, I explained to the client the importance of providing specific STAR examples to back up our statements. Within the cover letter, I addressed the following selection criteria (both essential and desirable):
Essential
- Registration with Australian Health Practitioner’s Regulation Agency with a current licence to practice as a Registered Nurse
- Effective interpersonal skills
- Effective written and verbal communication skills
- Demonstrated ability to work in a multidisciplinary health care team
- Demonstrated ability to deliver high-quality patient care
- Demonstrated commitment to own professional development
Desirable
- Knowledge of the quality improvement process
- Computer literacy
As we only had two pages to fulfil the requirements of the cover letter, I explained to the client that we could meet all criteria in just a few examples, with some keywords highlighted in bold to show that we have addressed all criteria. I prepared the client for the examples in an email before our consultation, and then during our consultation, I provided some specific examples to help prompt her. The client was very forthcoming with information and had some excellent examples showcasing her qualities as a Nurse. Once I had these examples, I put them into a clear STAR model as I was preparing the cover letter. In the introduction paragraph, I addressed all points that did not require a specific example and then provided a total of three examples that incorporated all criteria. The client was very confident in the examples she gave me, and I believe that together we created a very strong cover letter and application.
