The STAR Method

At Select Resumes we use the STAR method to present your skills and achievements against the selection criteria and position description.

The STAR method is recommended by the Australian Public Service Commission on their guide to Applying for an APS Job: Cracking the Code.

The STAR method involves breaking down your experience into a Situation, Task, Action and Result, to ensure a clear picture of your skills and achievements is communicated. The key to a strong position application is to highlight your achievements and careers moments that you are particularly proud of, rather than simply your role responsibilities.

Situation

Briefly describe the situation, such as what your role was and who was involved.

Task

An outline of your task and the challenge.

Action

A break down of the steps that you took to address the task.

Result

What the end result was, such as feedback or a measurable outcome for the stakeholders involved.

Two Page Statement of Claims

A more concise application, utilising the STAR method, we write this popular style of response for some areas of Government, for example, Queensland Health. Other states and organisations have followed suit, and more are now asking for an “up to 2-page cover letter” or “statement of claims no more than 2 pages” addressing the key capabilities of the role.

Three Page Statement of Claims

Similar to the above style of application, however, there may be more actual points to address, and therefore a longer page limit is offered.

One-Page Pitch and Two-Page Pitch

Increasingly, Government job applications are requesting a one-page or two-page pitch to address the requirements of the position and best showcase your experience and achievements. A more concise approach to job applications, this method makes it easier to focus on the key achievements of your work history and stay on message.

Traditional Key Selection Criteria Points

If there are no page or word limits listed on the position description or job advertisement for the role, we research the organisation website and try to identify if there are any word limits listed as a general guide for applications for roles within that particular government job. Many jobs are advertised without words limits and simply ask for the candidate to “address the selection criteria”.

In this case, we deliver approx. 350 – 500 words, or around 1 page. This is generally considered as a standard selection criteria response. For this service we have a set price per response, however, if there are more than 6 points, we will tailor a specific quote to ensure the price of our service remains affordable.
