Why Work in 2022 Will be Better Than 2021
The New Year is often a time for reassessment, new beginnings and reflecting upon the achievements or frustrations of the year just past. Many find themselves embarking on that health regime they have been putting off, while others will make the decision to completely freshen up their homes. Still, others will want to challenge themselves in a new job and if so, freshening up your resume is a vital step in achieving that particular 2022 New Year resolution.
But COVID has affected us all in one way or another. To a greater or lesser extent, we have all had to reassess priorities, what we are good at, and where to position ourselves in order to, in some cases, just survive.
But in order to even consider a new career move, be it a new job in an existing company, moving up in your chosen industry, or a total change of career, you need to be prepared. When was the last time you looked at your resume? Six months ago? A year? More? It is not that unusual. Most people are of the opinion that a resume is only needed when you want it, and hopefully, it is not that often. But the truth is, it can become an urgent requirement at any time. You may suddenly see that perfect job advertised when you least expect it, and you need to move fast. The worst thing you can do is execute a rushed update and submit a below-bar application simply because you were unprepared.
Many people are glad to see the back to 2021 but are wondering what 2022 holds in store. According to the Australian Government website specialising in job outlooks, there is likely to be demand in industries where employment has grown strongly in recent years, including:
- Health Care and Social Assistance
- Professional, Scientific and Technical Services
- Education and Training
- Construction
Workers will be needed in the Healthcare and Social Assistance industry to support the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), investments in hospitals, and the growing demand for aged care, childcare, and home-care based services. Some of the jobs likely to need workers are:
- Aged and Disabled Carers
- Registered Nurses
- Child Carers
- Welfare Support Workers
Qualified and highly educated workers will be needed in the Professional, Scientific and Technical Services industry. Check out career pathways for jobs like these:
- Software and Applications Programmers
- Management and Organisation Analysts
- Accountants
Workers will be needed in the Education and Training industry. The number of school-aged children is growing, and there is a demand for adult and community education. This means teachers and support workers like these will be needed:
- Primary School Teachers
- Secondary School Teachers
- Education Aides.
ABC, however, has released a report that quotes CBA’s head of Australian economics Gareth Aird saying that there are now signs that not only has the damage during the lockdowns been smaller than expected, but the rebound in employment should also be robust as restrictions lift. “Job vacancies have held up well during the lockdowns,” he said. “Our expectation at this stage is that employment will post a small negative in the October labour force survey, followed by a bounce of around 150,000 in the November report. Another strong outcome is anticipated in December as Victoria reopens.”
So, there is reason to be cautiously optimistic as January 2022 rolls around. So, even if you are not considering an immediate move, it is a wise choice to keep your resume updated in the knowledge that your resume is the best it can be.
At Select Resumes, one of our popular services is The Update. What we find is that since the client’s last resume was written, not only has there been a seismic shift in the way we work, but they have mastered a range of new skills, competencies and perhaps even qualifications. All these elements need to be reflected in a resume update. The best way to highlight them is by adding a key achievement. The achievements give your resume its beating heart; it showcases you as an individual, not just a list of qualifications and jobs. They are a great way of packing a huge amount of vital, noteworthy information into one knockout paragraph. And what is more, they get you shortlisted for an interview.
