State of the 2018 Job Market
So, the first quarter of the year is now behind us. What does the 2018 job market look like? It has proven to be stronger than forecast, with the national unemployment rate at a five-year low at 5.5%. 2017 saw 300,000 full time and 58,000 part-time jobs created.
There are reasons to be both hopeful and cautious about the 2018 job market. According to a report by the Australian Bureau of Statistics, Australia recently enjoyed its 15th straight month of growth. 35,000 new jobs were added in December. However, it should be noted that unemployment in December 2017 rose slightly to 5.5 percent as more people looked for work. This pushed the participation rate up to a seven-year high of 65.7 percent.
Capital Economics analyst Paul Dales said that while there was some “softness” in the figures, the overall picture is bright. He said that the unemployment rate eased back from the 5.7 percent recorded at the start of 2017. “Further progress will be made in 2018”.
What Does it all Suggest?
Ultimately – and especially if you are a graduate, or just entering study – you want to know where the work is. Unsurprisingly, healthcare workers are always in demand. And with Australia’s ageing population putting more pressure on health services, the demand for highly skilled health professionals will rise. According to the latest Department of Employment projections, industry sectors such as medical services and hospitals are all expected to experience an increase in growth over the next few years.
Engineers are still an in-demand workforce. Structural engineers are in high demand for building projects. With that in mind, a degree in civil engineering will serve you very well. Earth Sciences are another option proving popular and has plenty of options for well-paid employment. Earth Science covers a broad area and includes all fields of scientific inquiry into our planet. Students who complete a Bachelor of Environmental Science can look forward to a salary of $60k in their first year. They can also expect massive growth in the years to come.
More Areas of Growth
Other areas of growth for the 2018 job market are the more usual professions such as law, education and IT. Other industries still performing well include architecture, construction, and accounting. In fact, Hays quarterly report on accountancy and finance found that there is currently a demand for accountants in regional locations. This means you will be more likely to earn more if you are willing to relocate to a remote area for work.
