Case Study – Resume and Cover Letter by Liam K
The client has extensive experience as a multi-skilled Plant Operator in a number of different fields, such as railway development and pipeline construction, and was looking to apply for similar positions within his organisation. The client is certified in the operation of a diverse range of plant and machinery, and had assumed additional responsibilities in the areas of logistics and site support at his current place of employment. His existing documents were out-dated and did not represent his diverse skill-set, as well as his experience in logistics, planning, and team management.
The client’s work history showed that he was willing to undertake additional training for any job requirements, and had demonstrated an excellent workplace safety record. In structuring his resume and cover letter, I chose to emphasise the following points:
- The client’s excellent problem-solving skills, safety record and attention to detail that have allowed him to undertake additional responsibilities in the areas of logistics and planning, which involved directing fellow team members in routine operations as well as troubleshooting and amending any unexpected complications
- The client’s extensive work history and demonstrated ability to consistently deliver project requirements within expected timeframes at a high level of workmanship and quality
During the initial consultation, the client had not considered how his additional responsibilities in management and logistics may lend him an advantage in future applications, even if he was still interested in primarily working as a Plant Operator. By requesting that the client break down his key workplace responsibilities, I was able to uncover a great deal of additional information that proved very useful in marketing his main strengths. I look forward to hearing from the client about the outcome of his future applications.
